Barbados has stunning seascapes and landscapes and an abundance of golden beaches, you will have no trouble finding the perfect location and venue for your destination wedding. As a ‘Brit’ you will feel right at home on this Bajun island. The people are friendly and care greatly about making every visitor feel special. It is a charismatic island with a unique charm and warmth, unlike any other Caribbean island.
Barbados was once part of the British Empire before Independence, some 50 years ago. Cars drive on the left hand side of the road and the whole island has a distinctly British, rather than an American, or French vibe about it. Barbados, has a rich and fascinating history. Its people are praised for being some of the friendliest in the world.
The climate and weather of Barbados
Barbados stands alone in the Caribbean Sea, to the East of the other chain of volcanically formed West Indian islands. It is unique as it was formed many thousands of year ago by the buildup of coral. It is this coral that gives Barbados beaches their glorious golden sands.
Barbados weather is generally warm and sunny all year round but although warm, it is cooled by the North Easterly trade winds. Barbados has over 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, making it an all round holiday destination! However being a tropical island, it does rain! This is usually the time to visit the rum shack or bar maybe!

A cool mountain or sea breeze may require a shoulder wrap, but a jacket will most probably be too hot to wear unless you are in an air conditioned hotel. Elegant Tropical wedding fashions offer comfort through the day and into the evening.
If your ceremony is on the beach, then flat shoes or no shoes is the best option. Comfort must come before vanity in this climate of warmth and humidity! A lavish traditional English wedding in a plantation house may demand a greater elegance and top hat and tails may be just the ticket!
Some young Bridegrooms favour lightweight, white linen trousers or chinos, worn with an open cool shirt. A jacket is a challenge in the heat, unless lightweight and unlined. Brides will feel most comfortable in natural fabrics such as a soft cotton, tulle, silk or lawn and my advice is to avoid the tradition nylon and synthetics of European style dresses.
I have seen Bridegrooms and Brides on the beaches in Barbados in English style suits and dresses which are often most unsuitable. They can’t wait to get out of them as soon as the ceremony is over, which is such a shame!
Choose sensible clothing suitable for the hot climate, that is light and comfortable.
