What will people remember about your wedding day?

  • Not how much you spent.
  • Not the price of the flowers, the size of the venue or whether every chair was dressed with a perfectly tied bow.

They will remember how it made them feel.

They will remember the warmth, the laughter and the love. They will remember the promises you made, the hands held tightly in yours and the people gathered around you. Most of all, they will remember the two people standing at the heart of it all, choosing one another.

That is the beauty of a Handfasting.

It brings everything gently back to what truly matters: your story, your people, your promises and your love.

Begin with the two of you

When wedding planning begins, it is very easy to be swept into believing that everything must be bigger, more elaborate and more expensive.

Before long, the wedding can become more about the arrangements than the couple at its centre.

So, before you book anything, ask yourselves:

What truly matters to us?

Perhaps it is making your promises in a place that holds special meaning. Perhaps it is having your closest family and friends beside you. Perhaps it is including your children, your dogs or the people who have supported you throughout your relationship.

Once you know what matters most, you can place your time, energy and budget there—and let go of the things that do not feel important to you.

Let nature be your venue

A Handfasting does not need to take place in a grand hotel or beneath an enormous floral arch.

It can be held in:

  • a woodland,
  • a garden,
  • beside water,
  • on a hillside or
  • in another place that already feels special to you.

Nature provides its own setting: the trees, the sky, the changing light, the sound of birds and the earth beneath your feet. Very little needs to be added because the beauty is already there.

Choosing a place that is naturally beautiful can reduce the need for expensive decorations, but it also gives the ceremony something money cannot buy—a genuine sense of place.

Wear what feels like you

And what should you wear to a Handfasting?

Whatever feels like you.

You may dream of:

  • a wedding dress,
  • a flowing cloak,
  • a favourite suit or
  • something colourful and gloriously unconventional.

You might choose clothes you already own, ask someone you love to make something for you or buy an outfit you know you will enjoy wearing again.

A Handfasting gives you permission to step away from expectations. You do not have to dress for tradition or for anybody else’s idea of what a wedding ought to look like.

You can simply look and feel like yourselves.

Invite the people you truly want beside you

A smaller guest list does more than reduce the cost of a wedding. It changes the feeling of the ceremony.

When you are surrounded by the people you genuinely love and trust, there is a warmth and intimacy that cannot be manufactured. Everyone present understands why they have been invited. They are not simply watching your ceremony; they are witnessing your love and supporting the promises you make.

They can become part of the Handfasting too.

Guests might:

  • bring forward ribbons,
  • offer a blessing,
  • share a reading,
  • warm the rings or
  • contribute something meaningful to the elemental table.

Children can be involved, parents can be honoured and beloved dogs can walk alongside you.

Every person has a reason for being there—and that is far more meaningful than filling a room for the sake of numbers.

Make every element personal

The beauty of a Handfasting is that it offers a wonderful framework without giving you a rigid formula.

An elemental blessing can be shaped around your beliefs, your degree of spirituality and your relationship. Earth, air, fire and water might be represented by objects chosen especially by you—a stone from a favourite beach, water from a meaningful place, a feather found on a much-loved walk or herbs gathered from your own garden.

The cords or ribbons used to bind your hands can carry your colours, memories and family connections. They might include:

  • fabric from a parent’s wedding dress,
  • a ribbon chosen by your child,
  • colours representing the landscape around you or
  • strands brought forward by the people you love.

Your vows do not have to sound formal or borrowed. They can be honest, tender, joyful and entirely yours.

Your readings, music and stories can reflect the journey that brought you to this moment. You might:

  • drink from a loving cup,
  • share cake and ale,
  • exchange rings,
  • honour your ancestors or
  • jump the broom together as you step into the next chapter of your lives.

You do not need to include every ritual. You choose the elements that speak to you, and together we weave them into one beautiful, flowing ceremony.

Choose meaning, rather than more

A beautiful ceremony is not created by the cost of the flowers or the grandeur of the venue. It is created through thought, intention and love.

A favourite poem read by someone close to you may mean more than an expensive decoration. A ribbon carried forward by your child may hold more emotion than an elaborate wedding favour.

Sharing your own love story—how you met, what you have weathered and why you continue to choose one another—costs nothing, yet it may be the part everyone remembers.

Meaning is found in the details that belong to you, not in things purchased simply because they appear on a traditional wedding checklist.

Simple does not mean ordinary

There is a great difference between a ceremony being inexpensive and a ceremony feeling cheap.

A simple Handfasting can still feel rich in atmosphere, ritual, emotion and beauty. In fact, removing the unnecessary extras often makes room for something much deeper.

There is time to breathe, to listen, to laugh, to feel the hands holding yours and to understand the promises being made.

At the heart of every Handfasting I create are warmth, love and belonging. Whether your ceremony takes place in a woodland clearing with ten people, in your own garden with your children and dogs, or as part of a larger wedding celebration, it will be shaped around you.

Your story. Your people. Your promises. Your way.

Because a beautiful Handfasting does not have to cost the earth.

When the day is over, people will not remember how much you spent.

They will remember how it made them feel.
