There is something quite magical about a festival Handfasting ceremony.
Unlike a traditional venue wedding, festivals have a unique energy all of their own. People arrive with a completely different mindset. The music, the laughter, the colour, the sense of community and the feeling of freedom create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else.
For a few precious days, people leave behind their nine-to-five lives. They step away from the routines of home and work and immerse themselves in a world that feels liberated, creative and welcoming. There are no traffic queues, no rushing from one appointment to another and, for a little while at least, life seems to slow down.
Festivals invite people to be themselves.
Perhaps that is why a Festival Handfasting Ceremony feels so different too.
From My Ceremony Journal

It was at WOMAD Festival, around fifteen years ago, that I first realised festival ceremonies were something entirely different.
A young couple came to see me because they wanted a Handfasting to celebrate their engagement. We found a quiet place to sit together and started talking about their relationship. Rather than discussing practical arrangements, I gently asked them about their journey together.
- “When did you know you were in love?”
- “How did the proposal happen?”
- “How do you imagine your lives together in five or ten years’ time?”
- “What is it about one another that fills your heart with love?”
Part way through our conversation, the gentleman quietly stood up and walked away. His fiancée apologised and followed him. A few minutes later she returned looking upset. “I’m so sorry,” she said. “He’s just not interested.” At first I assumed she meant he was no longer interested in the Handfasting itself.
The following day she came back to find me and quietly told me they had ended their engagement. I simply held her and gave her a hug. As sad as it was, I couldn’t help thinking how fortunate they were to have discovered their truths before making a lifelong legal commitment. That moment has stayed with me ever since. It taught me that even within the relaxed, joyful atmosphere of a festival, ceremonies can uncover conversations people may never otherwise have had.
Sometimes celebration becomes reflection. Sometimes ritual brings clarity. And sometimes that is the greatest gift a ceremony can offer.
Why Couples Choose a Festival Handfasting Ceremony
Many couples who choose a festival Handfasting ceremony aren’t rejecting marriage. They are simply choosing to celebrate their relationship in a way that feels authentic to them. Some don’t want the pressure that can arrive the moment an engagement is announced. Suddenly there are questions about venues, guest lists, budgets and expectations from family and friends.
Instead, many festival couples simply want to pause for a moment and say, “This is us.” Others choose festivals because they are already surrounded by the things they love.
Whether it’s music, medieval living, Viking culture, fairy folklore, classic vehicles, dogs, food or simply being outdoors in nature, the festival already reflects who they are. The ceremony becomes another expression of that shared passion. That relaxed atmosphere allows people to celebrate in ways that often wouldn’t feel possible within a more traditional setting.
Festival Insight
The Atmosphere Is Never the Enemy
One of the greatest skills a festival celebrant develops is learning to work with the atmosphere rather than trying to control it. Festivals are alive with sound and movement. Music drifts across from another stage, drums begin unexpectedly, children wander into the ceremony space and complete strangers often stop to watch. Sometimes I invite those passing by to become part of the celebration.
“Do you know this couple?” I might ask with a smile. Usually, the answer is no. “Well, today you can become their witnesses.” Within moments, strangers become a congregation, cheering, applauding and sharing in one of the most important moments of another person’s life. Rather than seeing these moments as interruptions, experienced celebrants learn to embrace them. The festival itself becomes another participant in the ceremony.
What Festival Celebrancy Has Taught Me
One of the reasons I continue returning to festivals year after year is because they constantly remind me that celebrancy is a journey of lifelong learning. No two ceremonies are ever the same because no two couples are ever the same.
Every year brings new people, new stories and new experiences. It encourages creativity, adaptability and a willingness to trust the moment. I never simply repeat a script. Every ceremony has a beginning, a middle and an end, but everything in between is created around the people standing in front of me.
As an intuitive celebrant and energy healer, I find myself listening just as much as speaking. Very often couples later tell me, “Those words felt as though they had been written just for us.” That is always the greatest compliment.
Glenda’s Reflection
One of the greatest gifts festival celebrancy has given me is the confidence to trust the moment.
Every festival has taught me something different. Every couple brings their own story, every gathering has its own personality and every ceremony has its own unique energy.
I’ve learnt that the most memorable ceremonies often come when we stop trying to control every detail and simply become fully present. When we trust our experience, listen carefully and embrace the unexpected, something rather wonderful happens. The ceremony becomes authentic, heartfelt and completely unique to the people standing before us.
Final Thoughts
A festival Handfasting ceremony is far more than a wedding held outdoors. It is an opportunity for people to celebrate love in surroundings that already feel like home to them. Whether the sun shines, the rain pours, the wind blows or the ground turns dusty beneath our feet, the spirit of a festival rarely changes.
- People laugh together.
- Dance together.
- Support one another.
- Celebrate one another.
For me, every festival brings another opportunity to meet amazing people, witness remarkable stories and be reminded why I chose this wonderful profession. There is an honesty about festival ceremonies that I have always loved. People arrive as they are. They celebrate with sincerity. And somehow, amidst all the joyful chaos, beautiful ceremonies continue to unfold. Perhaps that’s the real magic of a festival Handfasting ceremony.
